#14. Artificial gravity

Here are this week's 3 links worth exploring:

  1. Determine the necessary factors to generate x G of artificial gravity aboard a spinning spacecraft. The three factors are spin rate (seconds per rotation), radius of rotation (meters), and the G forces created at the circumference (Earth gravity is 1.0). Given any two known factors, Python is used to calculate the third: https://betterprogramming.pub/python-shorts-artificial-gravity-in-space-3c2146eff150

  2. Poliastro is a Python library which provides a friendly API that seeks to lower the barrier of entry and solve for astrodynamics and orbital mechanics challenges. Its been used by IBM Space Tech, the Libre Space Foundation, and many other companies and academic programs in the space sector: https://www.poliastro.space/

  3. CERN and NASA are jointly organizing “Accelerating the Adoption of Open Science”, a week long open science summit at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland, from 10 to 14 July 2023. The summit will include a mix of online sessions and in-person panel discussions open for anyone to attend and participate in, and invite-only workshops: https://home.cern/news/announcement/knowledge-sharing/cernnasa-summit-accelerating-adoption-open-science

Quote of the Week: "Ultimately, moving into the rest of the solar system as a species is not a technological achievement, but an accomplishment of the human spirit. "Space" ... is a metaphor for expansiveness, opportunity, and freedom. More than a place or even an experience, it is a state of mind. It is a physical, mental, and spiritual experience in which humanity can move beyond the current equilibrium point, begin to change, and eventually transform itself into something so extraordinary that we cannot even imagine it ... The choice of becoming citizens of the universe can be rejected, but humanity can no longer plead ignorance of what is truly possible." — Frank White, The Overview Effect
